NFL Week 9: November 3rd – 7th, 2016

We’ll provide some details and insights on some potential daily fantasy defense/special team value plays for week 9.

Vegas lines are as of the time of this writing.

Defense

Kansas City Chiefs – Salaries: DraftKings (DK) – 3500, FanDuel (FD) – 5100. Kansas City’s salary ranks them 4th/3rd on DK/FD, respectively.

The Vegas line currently has the game total with the Jaguars at 45.5 points with the Chiefs as -9 point home favorites (widest spread on the board).

Kansas City’s defense ranks 19th in rushing yards allowed (113.0), 14th in passing yards allowed (244.9), and 8th in points allowed (19.6). Kansas City ranks tied for 1st in takeaways (16) and 1st in picks. Kansas City also ranks 11th against QBs (15.65), 17th against RBs (17.74), 24th against WRs (26.26), and 8th against TEs (4.21) in fantasy points allowed. Kansas City ranked 4th in fantasy points scored (11) at Indianapolis last week.

The Jacksonville offense ranks 30th in rush yards gained (72.6), 15th in pass yards gained (258.0), and tied for 23rd in points scored (19.9). Jacksonville ranks tied for 5th most giveaways (13).

Bortles apparently brought in an outside consultant to work on his mechanics, not that this would make any difference for this week. The only foreseeable issue here for the Chiefs is if they take their foot off the pedal and allow Bortles and co. garbage-time points reminiscent of last week’s scenario against Tennessee. Bortles only appears somewhat comfortable when there is no pressure and the game doesn’t matter. Bortles and his offense should only go as far as the Chiefs allow.

Carolina Panthers – Salaries: DraftKings (DK) – 3400, FanDuel (FD) – 5200. Carolina’s salary ranks them 6th/2nd on DK/FD, respectively.

The Vegas line currently has the game total with the Rams at 45 points with the Panthers as -3 point road favorites.

Carolina’s defense ranks 3rd in rushing yards allowed (80.1), 30th in passing yards allowed (286.9), and tied for 26th in points allowed (28.0). Carolina ranks tied for 11th in takeaways (10), 7th in picks (7), and 8th in sacks (20). Carolina also ranks 30th against QBs (20.93), 8th against RBs (14.69), 31st against WRs (28.17) and TEs (12.21) in fantasy points allowed. Carolina ranked 2nd in fantasy points scored (19) against Arizona last week.

The Los Angeles offense ranks 29th in rush yards gained (79.9), 25th in pass yards gained (227.7), and 30th in points scored (17.1). Los Angeles ranks tied for 5th most giveaways (13) and 2nd in interceptions (10). The New York Giants racked up 21 fantasy points against the Rams in week 7 (week 8 bye).

Carolina gets their turn against Los Angeles. Todd Gurley and the Rams’ weak offensive line should get stuffed often, leaving Case Keenum to attempt to carry the load. The Panthers’ secondary is their weak link but the Rams’ offense is just weak period.

Philadelphia Eagles – Salaries: DraftKings (DK) – 3100, FanDuel (FD) – 4600. Philadelphia’s salary ranks them 9th/8th on DK/FD, respectively.

The Vegas line currently has the game total with the Giants at 43 points (tied 2nd lowest on the board) with the Eagles as +2.5 point road dogs.

Philadelphia’s defense ranks 20th in rushing yards allowed (114.7), 5th in passing yards allowed (214.1), and 4th in points allowed (16.7). Philadelphia ranks tied for 6th in takeaways (13), and 3rd in sacks (22). Philadelphia also ranks 5th against QBs (13.13), 15th against RBs (17.0), 7th against WRs (20.89,) and 4th against TEs (4.17) in fantasy points allowed.

The Giants’ offense ranks last in rush yards gained (70.3), 6th in pass yards gained (275.0), and tied for 26th in points scored (19.0). New York ranks 4th most in giveaways (14).

Despite the implied negative spread, the Eagles should matchup relatively well against their division rival. If Eli Manning seems like a reasonable play this week, then definitely fade the Eagles.

Baltimore Ravens – Salaries: DraftKings (DK) – 3300, FanDuel (FD) – 4400. Baltimore’s salary ranks them 7th/12th on DK/FD, respectively.

The Vegas line currently has the game total with the Steelers at 43 points (tied 2nd lowest on the board) with the Ravens as -3 point home favorites.

Baltimore’s defense ranks 4th in rushing yards allowed (81.9), 6th in passing yards allowed (220.0), and 9th in points allowed (19.9). Baltimore ranks tied for 6th in takeaways (13), 5th in picks (8), and 16th in sacks (16). Baltimore also ranks 10th against QBs (15.54), 6th against RBs (13.84), 28th against WRs (27.19,) and 2nd against TEs (3.6) in fantasy points allowed.

QB Ben Roethlisberger (knee) is currently projected to start. However, Ben’s road splits (15.45 DK points) are drastically down compared to home games (30.62 DK points) this season. If Ben ends up regressing this week or goes down again during the game, well…good luck Landry Jones. Ben’s official playing status can be verified by checking out the NFL injury report later in the week.
