NFL Week 3: September 22nd – 26th, 2016

We’ll provide some details and insights on some of the potential top daily fantasy defense/special team value plays for week 3.

Vegas lines are as of the time of this writing.

Defense

Houston Texans – Salaries: DK – 3000, FD – 5200. Houston’s salary ranks them 2nd/10th on FD/DK, respectively, making the Texans a better value on DraftKings.

The Vegas line has the game total with New England at 40.5 points (2nd lowest on the board) with Houston as -1 point favorites on the road on Thursday night.

Jimmy Garoppolo (shoulder) is out and third round rookie, Jacoby Brissett will make his first start on a short week. Julien Edelman will be the backup QB.

Houston ranks 1st in sacks and 3rd in yards allowed, pass yards allowed, and points allowed. Per ESPN stats, rookie QBs are 0-6 in starts against Houston under O’Brien as the Texans’ HC, with the Texans winning those games by an average of 14 points. J.J. Watt recorded 10 sacks in those 6 games.

Dealing with a Belichick schemed team is always a tricky affair, but this should be an interesting matchup.

Update: Rob Gronkowski will likely suit up and is looking probable. The Vegas spread has now dropped to a pick ’em and the game total has dropped to 39.5 (now lowest on the board).

Miami Dolphins – Salaries: DK – 3000, FD – 4600. Miami’s salary ranks them 6th/10th on FD/DK, respectively.

The Vegas line currently has the game total with Cleveland at 41.5 points (3rd lowest on the board) with the Dolphins as -9.5 point favorites (largest spread on the board) at home.

QB Josh McCown (shoulder) is likely to miss this game, and will now be replaced by third string QB Cody Kessler. Kessler is a third round rookie who will take his first NFL snap this Sunday. If the game script holds, Miami’s defense could potentially have a nice bounce back week after allowing Jimmy Garoppolo a 130.8 passer rating in New England, before knocking him out of the game.
Update: Cleveland’s WR1 Corey Coleman broke his hand in practice and will miss this week’s game. When it rains in Cleveland, it pours.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers– Salaries: DK – 3100, FD – 4500. Tampa Bay’s salary ranks them 10th/8th on FD/DK, respectively.

The Vegas line has the game total with Los Angeles at 42 points (4th lowest on the board) with the Bucs as -4.5 point favorites at home.

Through the first two games of the season, the Rams’ “offense” has yet to score a touchdown and rank last in yards, passing yards, and points scored. The team has scored a total of 9 points (3 FGs) thus far.

Tampa Bay’s run defense, through the young season, ranks 6th in fantasy points allowed to RBs and 8th in rush yards allowed. The Bucs have faced Atlanta and Arizona so far. The Rams’ only potential offensive weapon would be Todd Gurley, and if the Bucs can render him ineffective, Case Keenum, leading the worst offense in the league, could potentially be in for a long afternoon.

Dallas Cowboys – Salaries: DK – 2500, FD – 4600. Dallas’ salary ranks them 6th/22nd on FD/DK, respectively, making the Cowboys a much better value on DraftKings.

The Vegas line has the game total with Chicago at 45 points with Dallas as -7 point favorites at home on Sunday night.

QB Jay Cutler ranks 29th in yards and passer rating, with a 1:2 TD/Int ratio through two games. Cutler is also tied for the league high in sacks taken with 8. Cutler left last week’s game with a hurt thumb on his throwing hand, and his current status is day-to-day. Brian Hoyer would step in under center if Cutler sits. If the game script holds, forcing Cutler or Hoyer to throw from behind, good things could potentially be in store for the Cowboys’ defense.
Update – Jay Cutler has been ruled out so Brain Hoyer will start under center for Chicago.
