Offensive Gap and D-Line Technique Designations

Offensive Gap and D-Line Technique Designations

Offensive Gap Designations

Offensive gap designations are identified as the gaps between each offensive lineman and tight ends. Each gap between the offensive linemen positions are designated with a letter.

For example, a double A-Gap blitz will have two defenders blitz in the two gaps between the center and guards.

Defensive Line Technique Designations

Defensive line technique designations are identified by numbers where exactly a defensive lineman is positioned across from an offensive lineman.

For example, a 3-technique defensive tackle will be aligned on the outside shoulder of a guard (away from the center), whereas a 5-technique defensive end will be aligned on the outside shoulder of the offensive tackle across from him.
